Create a medal/prize for SELL2012 games

DESIGN COMPETITION for Aalto University students

Create a medal/prize for SELL Student Games 2012 supporting the green theme of the games!

Traditional SELL Student Games will be held in Otaniemi on 17 – 20th May 2012. The event at issue is the most international and largest student sporting event of the following year in Finland and has a vast international visibility through its participative countries. SELL Student Games is a multi-sport event open to all university and polytechnic students around the world and in the competition there is no age limits or level requirements for the participants.

The name of the event is composed of the first letters of host countries` original names (Suomi, Eesti, Latvija, Lietuva). The first SELL Student Games event was held already in the year 1923 and originated from the cooperation of student organizations in the founder countries. Aalto University Sports Club and Aalto University Student Union will be the hosts in 2012. For more information.

Sustainability, in its all forms, and environmental issues are on the focal point of the 2012 event for the first time in the history of the SELL Student Games. The event has already gained recognition of its environmental approach by receiving a SLU eco label as an environmentally responsible sports event.

The aim of the challenge for Aalto University students would be on sustainable product planning of the prizes handed out for the competitors of the SELL Student Games. Recycling, multi-purpose use, environmentally friendly material use and other sustainable principles may be used in creating/producing the design. About 2000 participants from 15 countries will take part in the event and a rough estimate of the need for prizes is about 800 pieces all together. Prizes will be given to best three contestants in every sport, so it needs to be visible in some form which placing the prize indicates (e.g. different colors/shapes, engraving, etc.). This means that there will be approx. 265 medals/prizes for each placing. Prizes should also represent Aalto University in their visual expression (colors/logo).

Criteria for a good design:

  • sustainability
  • estimations of the timeframes for manufacturing purposes
  • feasibility on material choices
  • visually and physically pleasing and inspiring design
