Mobility is especially important in Aalto University because it has several campuses in several cities. Public transportation consists of buses, trams and (metro) trains. Cycling (and its promotion) can also be considered a part of a functional public transportation system. To ensure the mobility of its members, AYY promotes the development of working transportation networks.

Public transport in Helsinki & Espoo

HSL, Helsingin Seudun Liikenne (Helsinki Region Transport), is responsible for the metropolitan area’s relatively comprehensive public transportation network. Students are entitled to a 50 percent discount on period tickets and individual tickets bought with HSL’s travel card. HSL offers a very useful journey planner, which shows you route-specific schedules, route changes and lets you plan routes from point A to point B. The planner also gives tips on cycling routes. Länsimetro has significantly reshaped public transportation in the metropolitan area. It is especially convenient for those Aalto students who need to travel between Otaniemi and Töölö.

Trains & buses in Finland

VR (trains) grants students discount on their tickets. The discount is -30 % for long-distance trains and -50 % for commuter trains. More information can be found on VR’s website. You receive the discount by showing either a VR discount card or a student ID card with VR logo on it (this is the card issued by your student union).

In buses students are eligible for a discount upon presentation of a student identity card issued by Matkahuolto or by showing a student card with the Matkahuolto logo printed on the card. The student discount varies depending on the bus company. On Matkahuolto’s webpage there are often also some online offer tickets available.

Flying

Some airlines have some discounts that apply to students or young people. For example, Finnair and Kilroy offer lower fares to young persons and students.
