1. INFORMATION ABOUT TECHNICAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING AYY’S E-MAIL LISTS

List.ayy.fi server that administers AYY’s mailing lists failed to operate on 20 May and has been restored after that from very old backup copies from August and December 2012. The service was reopened on 28 May. Recipient lists, passwords and administrators of the lists are according to information from 1 Aug 2012. List administrators will have to update this information. In case of forgotten passwords, you can get help from AYY’s IT sector as usual at tietotekniikka@ayy.fi.

Detailed instructions and background information about the problems can be found on ayy.fi at /information-about-problems-concerning-ayys-mailing-lists/.

2. CAMPUS EXPO 17-18 SEPT

This year, Campus Expo will be held in two days. On the first day on Tuesday, 17 Sept, Campus Expo will be held in the School of Economics main building lobby. On Wednesday, 18 Sept, Campus Expo is held in Otaniemi. Further information on arrangements and registration forms to be provided later.

3. AFYE PROVIDES FUNDING FOR EVENT ORGANISING

Aalto First Year Experience (AFYE) provided by Aalto University welcomes new students to the university and opens a window to various opportunities provided by Aalto, regardless of disciplinary borders. AFYE means everything that is related to a new student’s welcoming as part of the Aalto community during the first year of studies. Orientation at the schools and tutor activities are part of AFYE’s concept. In addition, we organise a variety of events and occasions and on our website we inform new students about opportunities that concern them.

AFYE invites student organisations, guilds and associations to create an incredible first year for new students and show everything that Aalto consists of. AFYE provides funding for events organised for new students during the upcoming academic year.

4. NEW FACEBOOK SITE OF AALTO-LIIKE ” SPORTS TRYOUTS IN AALTO”

AYY’s Sports Section Aalto-liike has opened a new Facebook site ”Sports tryouts in Aalto”. On the site, associations or other parties can market their sports tryouts or sports events where anyone can participate. Like the site and read more at https://www.facebook.com/SportsTryoutsInAalto.

5. NEW SPORTS EVENT FOR AALTO MEMBERS IN THE AUTUMN

During this spring, approximately ten sports associations of Aalto have planned an event for the next autumn with AYY’s representatives. The aim of the event is to make the activities of Aalto sports associations more familiar to all Aalto students. The event will consist of a more competitive multiathlon, where teams go through checkpoints arranged by associations in suitable locations (much in the same way as in KY City Challenge), and a laid-back fair organised in connection with the event, where associations can tell more about their activities and possibly organise some tryouts. The event will be organised at the turn of September-October.

Now is a good time to let us know if your sports association wants to join and organise a checkpoint for the competition and/or participate in the fair. The sooner your association gets involved, the better chances you have to contribute to the implementation of this new event!

6. KYL TO PUBLISH A GROUNDBREAKING POEM ALBUM IN JUNE

In June, Helsinki Academic Male Choir (KYL) will publish a record consisting of male choir compositions based on poems of Larin-Kyösti. The album is groundbreaking in the Finnish choral scene, as its focus is solely on one poet’s lyrics and the expedition to the diverse stories of human life which they present.

7. PARTICIPATE IN THE MAKING OF ESPOO CINÉ FESTIVAL!

Every year, a large group of volunteers participate in the making of Espoo Ciné Film Festival (16-25 Aug 2013), without whom the festival would simply not exist. Voluntary workers get to see the festival films for free, have free meals every day, get a staff t-shirt and the festival catalogue, as well as a letter of reference at request. And when the festival is over, there is a party for the volunteers. Many volunteers have such a good time that they come back year after year to build this warm-hearted festival together.

Join the hustle of the first film festival of the autumn, and go behind the scenes to look how the film festival with 25,000 visitors is organised. Tasks vary from ticket sales to info desk and decorating. You can participate as long as you are over 18-years old, have an active attitude and you are willing to sacrifice your time in good company. Help is needed particularly during the festival, but also a few weeks before it.

Further information and registration form are available at: http://www.espoocine.fi/2013/talkoolaiset. (in Finnish)

8. BLOOMIN’ AFRICA ’14

Aalto University Student Union is taking about 30 students to Africa in the beginning of 2014! BLOOM is a journey that will be remembered as a great cultural experience. BLOOM is a way to find and learn.

BLOOM, Bridge of Learning – Operation: OndA! in Maputo, is a journey to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and it’s surroundings. We will spend three weeks in an African environment, in the Mozambican culture and, of course, with great people.

We will be working in different ways with a local non-governmental organization, ASSCODECHA as part of the project of a Finnish NGO, Taksvärkki (Operation: Day’s Work). Our project will consist of challenging tasks with, for example, infrastructure, education, and economic development or any special useful skills we got.

We are looking for people from all possible backgrounds, of all possible experience levels, with different kinds of skills and of all possible ages. These people will organize art workshops, film documentaries, teach entrepreneurial skills, build sanitary facilities etc. etc. However, the trip is all about learning and sharing experiences in two directions.

Part of the trip is reserved for relaxing and taking some time for ourselves. This could include safaris, water sports, day trips and so on. You decide! Application will be arranged in September. Keep your eyes and ears open for additional information. This time for Africa!
