In February, Dance Association Polijazz will arrange a unique concise course with the theme ”Interpretation of Music and Improvisation in Parter Dances. This partner dance course will focus on improvisation, the interpretation of music and the contact between the partners. These themes are practised with two common partner dances that differ from each other: the one is soft and slow waltz and the other is rhythmic disco dance, bugg. The aim is to learn how to ”colour” dance within the setting provided by a certain dance type or style. In the course, participants vary steps, dance positions, patterns and body use.  The aim is to develop the creativity to transfer the mood of the music into a movement.

INTERPRETATION OF MUSIC AND IMPROVISATION IN PARTNER DANCES

You do not need your own partner! Course teachers are Lotta Lehvävirta and Heru Reksoprodjo. Teaching is arranged in Finnish and English.

REGISTRATION

We hope that participants have previous dance experience, either from partner or solo dance, as well as the courage to put their own creativity and skills in the game. Previous experience from bugg or slow waltz is not necessary.

The course fee is €25 and it is paid to Polijazz account 130930-59683, Nordea Otaniemi, with the reference number 26 before the beginning of the course. You can sign up for the course by email at   emma.partanen(a)aalto.fi. Polijazz classes are intended primarily for students. If there is space in the class, also other than students are welcome.

3. TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY

The torchlight procession of university students in the metropolitan area was first arranged in 1951, the year when Marshal C. G.E. Mannerheim died. The procession still follows the route of Marshal’s funeral procession in the opposite direction starting fromt he Hietaniemi Cemetary and ending at Senate Square.

Today, the torchlight procession is arragned by four student unions: Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), Sibelius Academy Student Union (SAY), Svenska handelhögskolans studentkår (SHS) and Aalto University Student Union (AYY). The student unions also work in close cooperation with the Cadet Union of National Defence University. The representatives of the Cadet Union carry the main flag of the procession.

In 2011, the brigade of the Finnish flags consists of the engineering student community Luolamiehet from Otaniemi. In 2010, the flag brigade consisted of Forestry students from the University of Helsinki, in 2009 from the students of School of Economics, in 2008 from Otaniemi female engineering students and in 2007 from the members of Kadettitoverikunta.

University students are welcome to participate in the event at Heroes’ Cross and the torchlight procession itself. The meeting places of the largest organisations are marked along the birch alley leading to the cemetery. Other students may join the procession in the instructed location after the flags.
