1. NEXT STOP AYY – APPLICATION FOR VOLUNTEER POSITIONS IS ONGOING!

Operate in the Student Union’s delegation, committee or body? AYY provides versatile duties for those who are interested in the community, culture, internationality, student advocacy, sports, culture of engineering students, communications or corporate relations.

The sections form the core of the volunteer work in the Student Union, acting directly as part of the various sectors. With their hard work, delegation members do the most visible activities in AYY, which is rewarded with memorable experiences, new skills and friends. The sections include

Aava, Aura, Aalto-Liike, Kopojory, Group X, International Section and TJ. Find out what is behind the mystery names and find your own group!

Committees are an easy and fun way to participate in the student union activities and gain experience from more specific fields. Activities include various events, events arranged for new students and development cooperation.

The application for the position of the chairperson in the sections will end on 2 Dec and for the majority of other positions on 7 Dec.

Hint: If you are interested in developing AYY’s association field into a more interactive direction, you can do it as a volunteer organisation agent in Aalto Community Section Aava  😉

2. SIGN UP FOR AYY’S ASSOCIATION TRAINING

Already 60 associations have signed up for AYY’s association training arranged on 8 December. The training day is approaching fast and now is the high time to sign up. It is particularly important that the old association members recommend the association training for the new members elected in the autumn meetings. The association training offers them a natural start to the association activities.

Please sign up at https://lomake.ayy.fi/yhdistykset/yhdistyskoulutus-8-12-2011/. Unfortunately, the form is only available in Finnish, but those who use other languages can sign up by email at jarjestoasiat@ayy.fi. If several people whose language is other than Finnish sign up, we will also arrange training in English.

3. TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY

The torchlight procession of university students in the metropolitan area was arranged for the first time in 1951, in the year of death of Marshal C. G.E. Mannerheim. The procession still follows the

route of Marshal’s funeral procession to the opposite direction, starting from Hietaniemi Cemetery and ending at Senate Square.

Today, the torchlight procession is organised by four student unions: the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), Student Union of Sibelius Academy (SAY), Svenska handelhögskolans studentkår (SHS) and Aalto University Student Union (AYY). The student unions also work in close cooperation with the Cadet Union of National Defence University. The representatives of the Cadet Union carry the main flag of the procession.

In 2011,  flags will consist of Luolamiehet, Otaniemi community of engineering studnets. In 2010, the flags consisted of forestry students of the University of Helsinki, in 2009 of the students of Economics, in 2008 of female engineering students from Otaniemi and in 2007 of the members of the Cadet Union.

University students are welcome to participate in the event at Heroes’ Cross and the torchlight procession itself. The meeting places of the largest organisations are marked along the birch alley leading to the cemetery. Other students may join the procession in the instructed location after the flags.

Further information is available at http://itsenaisyyspaiva.ayy.fi/fi/

4. SPORT SMÖKKI ON 7 DECEMBER

Would you like to try out your skills in table ice hockey or sumo wrestling? Or relax in a sauna after a game or a match? Who is Aleksi Airinen? SporttiSmökki answers all those questions and even the meaning of life.

Sport Smökki is a sport-minded event arranged by AYY’s sports section Aalto-Liike at Smökki on Wednesday following the Independence Day. In the event, several Aalto championships are competed, ranging from Kinect to NHL 2012 games.

In addition, there will be performances and workshops on footbag, beatboxing and massage, among other things.

See the more detailed schedule: http://users.tkk.fi/~lorkonev/sporttismokki/aikataulu.html.

The event is free and open to all Aalto members and their friends. We also offer sport drinks for the first participants and the first 100 to arrive will also get a free overall badge! Free food will be provided at 6pm!

You can play with your friends between competitions and performances. All games can be freely used outside the competitions, so you can just show up and have a good time. You can also play board and card games as well as old playstation hits.

More information at: http://users.tkk.fi/~lorkonev/sporttismokki/index.html.

1. INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATIONS INSPECTORS IN ASSOCIATIONS

Since the beginning of 2011, the accountants of the associations are called operations inspectors regardless of what is mentioned in the association rules. Accounting is only done in very rare associations now since it cannot be done by any other than those who have completed an accountant’s professional degree.

This change may sound significant but actually nothing else than the inspector’s title changes in small associations. All papers of the previous year, such as the minutes, accounts and the financial statement must be submitted to the inspector in good time. The inspector(s) will provide a report which is covered in the association meeting in the spring. Based on the report, the association meeting confirms the financial statement and grants or denies a discharge.

You can read more about this change at ayy.fi /toiminnantarkastus (unfortunately only in Finnish at the moment, but coming soon in English)

2. ADVANCE BOOKING OF ONE-TIME RENTAL FACILITIES IS APPROACHING

3. AYY’S WELL-BEING WEEK MOVES STUDENTS ON 31 OCT– 4 NOV

The well-being week on 31 Oct-4 Nov brings a healthy change to the students’ everyday life. It has never been this easy to try out fun sports. Get your booty shaking!

4. OTAKOPPI GATHERS A WOMEN’S BASEBALL GROUP – JOIN THE TEAM!

OtaKoppi is a baseball association operating within Aalto University Student Union, which now gathers a women’s team to play in a regional league next summer. We need more players to complete the team. You don’t necessarily need previous experience on playing in a team/league, but sportiveness and enthusiasm will get you far. However, it is recommended that you are familiar with baseball in some way. This is also an excellent opportunity to get back to baseball after your junior years or if you need a more relaxed team after more serious ones.

If you got even a little bit interested, please contact elina.kekki(at)iki.fi. Come and play in a fun team. Further information is also available at OtaKoppi website at www.otakoppi.fi (in Finnish)
