This is AYY’s association newsletter for the week 46/2016.

Content of the newsletter

  1. AYY’s association training on 8th of December
  2. Come and hear about the voluntary positions of AYY at Arabia Campus on 21.11. and in Otaniemi on 24.11.!
  3. AYY’s lost property practices are changing

  1. AYY’s association training on 8th of December

AYY’s association training will be held at Design Factory in Otaniemi on 8.12.

The training will be held in Finnish.

The programme of the training consists of a shared part, in which issues concerning all association operatives are looked at, and two group parts, which the participants can choose from several options according to their needs. There are groups for at least financial management, the legal and regulation issues of associations, communications, fundraising and corporate relations.

In compiling the training, the replies to the training need survey are being used, for which we thank all respondents. The association that won the prize draw of the survey has been contacted separately.

Registration begins and the exact training timetable will be published during November, as soon as possible after the timetable of the training has been completed.

  1. Come and hear about the voluntary positions of AYY at Arabia Campus on 21.11. and in Otaniemi on 24.11.!

The volunteer search of AYY is now open! There are numerous voluntary positions at our Student Union that differ in terms of their tasks and amount of work! Roles can be found from, amongst others, event production, campus development, international affairs, student advocacy and corporate relations. Do you want to know more, what opportunities there are in our student union? Come and hear about the experiences of volunteers at Arabia Campus in front of Tokyo lounge on Monday 21.11. at 1-3 pm and at the Undergraduate Centre lobby (Otakaari 1) on Thursday 24.11. at 1-3 pm! There will be casual discussion and the opportunity to ask about different positions. Snacks will be served. We want YOU!

Facebook event at Arabia Campus on 21.11.: https://www.facebook.com/events/1828372100764809/

Facebook event in Otaniemi on 24.11.: https://www.facebook.com/events/1797604650477560/

You can find more information about the search and the experiences of volunteers at /stop/en/.

  1. AYY’s lost property practices are changing

Up till now, it has been possible to bring objects from clothes and bags to items of value to AYY, found in the one-off rental premises of AYY or the campus area. Due to a lack of resources, the lost property service will end at the end of this year and such items will no longer be accepted at the office of AYY.

This means that from there on, passing on clothes or bags found in the premises of AYY or the campus to lost property offices or their owners is at the responsibility of the event organisers. It will only be possible to bring phones, wallets, keys and spectacles to the service point of AYY. Travel cards found are to be returned to the service points of HSL or given to bus drivers, who will pass them on to HSL.

So, the period of November and December is the last time that you can come to look for your lost property. At the end of December, all existing lost property will be taken from the storerooms of AYY for recycling or waste collection.

  1. Survey on training wishes for the associations DL 6.10.!

AYY is again organising association training on 8.12. at Design Factory and planning of the training is now beginning. An English session will be arranged separately according to demand. Now we’re hoping that as many associations as possible will reply to the survey regarding the training, which we’ll use to plan the association training of December and possible separate training sessions. There is time to reply to the survey until 6.10. and there’ll be a prize draw for the respondents for a free booking of the premises at either the Otaniemi Tietosauna or the Vaasankatu sauna and cabinet, to be used by 31.5.2017. Note that reservations after Jan 1st 2017 can be made after advance bookings, but you can also use the free reservation in the advance bookin period. More information about advance booking later on.

  1. Checkpoint keepers for the Tempaus cruise

We’re looking for checkpoint keepers for the Tempaus cruise setting sail on 2.11. This is the Baltic Queen’s 22 hour cruise to Tallinn, which sets off on Wednesday, 2.11 at 6.30 pm and returns the next day at 4 pm.

We would like the arrangement of a fun programme from the associations that keep the checkpoints in the common areas of the ship during the early part of the evening of the cruise, around 7 pm to 10 pm. In return, we offer the groups we select a cruise ticket for four persons and of course the opportunity to present the activities of the association to the cruise guests as much as they like!

If you association is interested, mail marko.laakso[ä]aalto.fi by Friday, 7.10.

More information about Tempaus: https://tempaus.fi/

  1. Association deals for the concert of Retuperän WBK and the Polytech Choir, Saturday, 29.10.2016

Retuperän WBK and the Polytech Choir are holding their first ever joint concert in the Helsinki Music Centre on Saturday, 29.10. at 1 pm and 5 pm. A brilliantly entertaining package of culture is in store! Hearing the whole male choir and the chemically fortified horn septet is a rousing experience that is different from the serenades and midnight trumpetings heard in Smökki and other festive locations (further information about the concert: https://www.facebook.com/events/1189701384374515/).

We are offering every association the opportunity to order tickets directly through us to our Helsinki Music Centre (and Turku) concerts. This means that you’ll get the tickets without delivery fees (in the Helsinki Music Centre, €2.50-€3.50 per ticket; this would be added to the price of the tickets when ordering online) when you order at least five tickets in one go through us. In a joint order, we’ll do our best to make sure that you’ll get the best possible places, as close to each other as possible. The concert tickets are cheap. For only 15 euros, a student can get to enjoy the pearls of culture. For older practitioners of academia, the price list is also suitable for the Master’s purse, with prices starting at 30 euros. The best seats in the concert halls will be sold for 40 and 65 euros.

If you’re interested or have questions, contact jori.jamsa[ä]aalto.fi or rwbk[ä]rwbk.fi. For logistical reasons, we would like orders by Wednesday,19.10 at the latest. Please tell us if this schedule is a problematic one for you. You’ll be informed about the delivery or collection of the tickets in conjunction with the order.

At Campus Expo, you’ll be able to introduce your association and its activities to new students, sell badges for overalls and make new acquaintances. We would like to see lots of stands, so sign up for the event, dear association activist!

During the day, the stands will be up from 10 AM to 2 PM. We will provide you a table and chair, other materials must be brought by the associations themselves. For more information, contact Aava at aava(at)list.ayy.fi.

  1. Communications 101 for the weekly newsletter

The weekly newsletter is published during the academic year on Mondays in three languages. Materials must be sent to tiedotteet@ayy.fi on the Thursday of the previous week by 10 AM. The information officer will then edit the content and send it for translation. If proficiency in a specific language is essential for your notice, state it in the text explicitly, e.g. “The seminar will be in Finnish!” to make sure it will be included in the other language versions. The translations are available for viewing at ayy.fi on Monday – take advantage of them with your Facebook events, for example. Texts delivered in English will be published in English in all language versions.

The optimal length of a notice is about two paragraphs + link for more information. This amounts to about 100 words, 750 characters or 10 lines. The more concise the text, the better. Remember to give your text a catchy title!

By default, one notice is published in the newsletter once. If there are few other notices, one news item may be published several times. The student union’s own announcements and those of organizations operating in the immediate sphere of the union take priority over other news. You can state a desired week of publication for your notice. Also, let us know if the time of publication is crucial for some promotional event, for example. Without any special information/wishes, notices will be published in the newsletter about 1-2 weeks before the big date (i.e. date of the event, deadline for sign-ups).

Questions? Feedback? Suggestions? Contact AYY information officer Henna Palonen at tiedottaja(ä)ayy.fi or 0505209440.

  1. The equality survey of AYY and Aalto University

Have you experienced inappropriate behaviour at student dos? Have you noticed discrimination in teaching situations? In the student associations, does everyone have the same rights? AYY and Aalto University are trying to find answers to these questions and others with an equality survey, the results of which will be utilised in coming projects to further equality.

As a prize, after responding one 100-euro gift card for the Stockmann department store will be drawn amongst those who have submitted their contact details, as well as a number of smaller prizes. The contact details are stored separately and cannot be connected to the replies to the equality survey.

You can get to the survey form from the link below:

  1. Earn EUR 800 for your association: a temp job at the Sillis for the Traditional Teekkari Party!

We offer associations the possibility to earn money at the Sillis for the Traditional Teekkari Dinner Party.
We need a group of 15 workers at the Sillis organised on 12 November, from approx. 08-20. The job includes everything from the morning arrangements and cooking to cleaning up. The job will pay the association a fee of EUR 800.
If your association can’t get the required number of workers together, the job can be shared between two associations. It would be best, however, if one group could take care of the whole thing.

Registrations and inquiries can be sent to Yours Truly.

  1. Tableware from the Teekkaritytöt for the autumn parties

Are you organising sitsis or other parties in the autumn? The Teekkaritytöt are offering the members of AYY tableware to rent for around 180 people, champagne glasses, pitchers etc. It’s also possible to hire out a chocolate fountain, for example as the star attraction for sauna evenings. More information at: http://teekkaritytot.blogspot.fi/p/astiavuokraus.html

  1. Would you like a cheerleader display for your event or arrange a try-out for the members of your association?

APC Foxes is the cheerleading team of Aalto Predators, set up in the autumn of 2015. We perform at the American football games of Aalto Predators and, when the opportunity arises, also at other different events. If you’d like us to perform at your event, arrange a try-out, or if you have other questions, contact cheercaptain ät predators.fi

P.S. The new term is now beginning and everyone’s welcome to join in with training, regardless of gender, age or previous experience! See further details in next week’s weekly newsletter.
