1. Store traces of your association operations in history
Is it easy to forget archiving? What is it necessary and worthwhile to archive in the first place? Is your archiving often left to the end of the year without you even noticing? Now is a good time to grab hold of it in order to avoid panic in December.

The archive of Aalto University Student Union offers the associations operating within it storage space, equipment and advice on archiving. Archiving is meant to give future operators a vivid idea of the association’s operations. It is worth archiving all self-produced materials relating to the association’s operations as well as other materials that might interest the next generations, all marked appropriately. Tips for limiting your archiving can be found, for example, on the Yhdistystoimijat website (in Finnish).

What is important is that archiving is kept in mind and executed throughout the year. Don’t be afraid to ask for some tips and contact arkisto(a)ayy.fi.

2. AYY invites you to join the Climate March 20.10.!
AYY invites its associations and all Aalto students to join the Climate March on Saturday, 20.10., for more ambitious environmental policies and decision-making based on scientific research! The goals and details of the Climate March can be found on the Facebook event in three languages: http://bit.ly/ilmastomarssi. Grab your overalls and/or other student symbols with you (if you wish) and join the other students on the event on the east side of the statue on Senate Square, starting from 14:15. More information on the student participation can be found in the sub-event of the Climate March, Opiskelijat ilmastomarssilla.

See you on Saturday, feel free to share the invitation!

6. Tableware rental for associations operating within AYY
AYY promotes ecology, and one way to reduce unnecessary waste is to use less disposable tableware at events. In the Otaranta club room, there’s a set of dishes that can be used by anyone renting the space. The other rental spaces have less tableware, but there are rental opportunities that include e.g. delivery to site and returning the dishes unwashed. Jalostajat and Astiva have inexpensive offers for associations within AYY, the details of which are listed below:

Jalostajat:

The Otaniemi refinement club Jalostajat rents dinnerware for 220 people flexibly and inexpensively to groups operating in Otaniemi! Delivery within the Otaniemi area is free of charge, and its cost to external locations will be decided separately depending on the distance. Additionally, the price includes dishwashing, so the dishes can be returned unwashed! The tableware can be rented by email at astiasto(a)jalostajat.fi, and we’re also happy to answer any questions about the tableware.

Astiva:
– agreement is open-ended, excluding high school graduation week in the spring
– discount always at least 20%; the earlier you book, the more room we have -> the bigger the discount

– specified quantities only need to be given (for weekend events) on the previous Monday
– delivery to the Otaniemi area free of charge Mon–Fri at 9 am–3 pm

Otaniemi Night of Arts invites you to enjoy art on campus

PRESS RELEASE

For release from 22 Aug 2018

Aalto University Student Union combines forces with student organisations and sets up Otaniemi Night of Arts, an interartistic art festival, on Saturday 6 Oct. The free event is aimed at all residents of the metropolitan area and celebrates the creativity and teekkari spirit of the Aalto community.

Otaniemi Night of Arts is a new kind of art festival organised for the first time on the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University. The event, taking place on the first Saturday of October, is characterised by student initiative and a broad conception of art.

“We wanted to create an event concept that would enable students to contribute something to the programme that’s creative, free and uniquely theirs – a bit like the Helsinki Night of the Arts,” says Julius Laakkonen, who’s in charge of artistic activities on the Board of the Aalto University Student Union.

Lava lamps and orchestral schlagers on the programme

There will be around thirty subevents during the Otaniemi Night of Arts, all free of charge.

The programme includes, for example, different types of music, dance, media art – and a painting to be collectively coloured in using paintball guns. Other events combining technology and art include a lava lamp workshop and a work of installation art to be collectively welded onto a car rim.

“We were delighted with the wide variety of event registrations. The programme includes events we would never have expected, let alone be able to come up with ourselves,” laughs Luukkanen.

The full programme of the Otaniemi Night of Arts will be published in mid-September.

The student community shows its creativity

Otaniemi Night of Arts is part of Aalto University Student Union’s theme year, the Year of Art. Its purpose is to highlight the collective creativity of Aalto University’s interdisciplinary student community.

Hence, the festival is being organised by a combination of students from all Aalto schools as well as several student associations from hobby clubs to guilds, i.e. the subject organisations of the students of technology.

The free event is aimed at all citizens. The organisers hope to welcome as many people as possible at Otaniemi to enjoy the creativity of the Aalto community.

“At the Student Union, we see daily that the Aalto community is capable of a multitude of things. I’m excited that we can now invite the whole metropolitan area to get to know the artistic, surprising side of our community,” remarks Luukkanen.

Presenting the Design Calendar for year 2018-19

The Aalto University Student Union and TOKYO ry are publishing a cooperated design calendar for the year 2018-19. The design work is done by Reetta Vartiala, and it commemorates the AYY Year of Art and the ARTS move to Otaniemi.

A preliminary look on the calendar view

TOKYO has traditionally published a design calendar, distributed to members free of charge, from the year 1975. The designer is chosen yearly by competition from amongst the students.

” The calendar offers a well-designed, beautiful option to digital calendars. Many of our students express themselves visually and might for example express their thoughts through drawing. You can tune the print calendar to match your style, and doodle on it during, for example, lectures”, TOKYO chairperson Matti JĂ€nkĂ€lĂ€ says.

A free calendar for members is also an AYY tradition. Both AYY and TOKYO members place immense value on a calendar and consider it an important service.

” It is awesome that to celebrate the Year of Art we can create something for all students of Aalto together with AYY. We have so many talented students in our school. Thus, we wish to show the entire community what we do, and to familiarize everyone with the culture of ARTS and TOKYO”, JĂ€nkĂ€lĂ€ continues.

The designer of the calendar was chosen through a contest, open to all students of Aalto University. The jury included, in addition to TOKYO and AYY representatives, the assistant professor of visual communications Arja Karhumaa and the designer of the last year’s calendar for TOKYO, Samu Salovaara.

Reetta Vartiala was chosen as the designer by the jury. She is a master’s degree student of interior design, who has studied package design as a minor subject, along with illustration. She participated in the competition for the first time.

Reetta Vartiala

” My calendar is the product of many years’ worth of thinking. In the fall, when the TOKYO calendar has been distributed, I’ve often thought on how it could be further improved”, Vartiala says.

In her plan, the calendar can be used both horizontally and vertically.

” I wanted that the calendar could suit several ways of use. I aim for clarity. All days are divided into three, so you can divide your day into for example morning, the time after lunch and the evening in the calendar.”

The year 2018-19 calendar combines the calendar traditions of TOKYO and AYY. It also binds the ARTS students through the year even more intensely into the Aalto community. The school’s move from Arabia to Otaniemi fills the designers mind with thoughts.

” Arabia feels like home, so it is a bit melancholic to move away. There are good points and parts to the move, though. It is good that the ARTS students will arrive in Otaniemi to rattle the cage. And we’ll have a brand-new wonderful building there, too”, she muses.

Vartiala hopes that the calendar will be taken in well by the entire Aalto community.

” I wish to waken the users of the calendar to think of the possibilities the design brings and how things can be viewed from many different points of view. Creativity can be found in all things, and even everyday things can be completed in more ways than just one.”

Year of Arts celebrates Aalto creativity

The Aalto University Student Union celebrates the Student Union’s Year of Arts in 2018. AYY Board member in charge of art, Julius Luukkanen, and Student Advocacy Specialist for ARTS students and Executive Manager for TOKYO Tero Uuttana tell us what you can expect in the future.

” The Year of Arts is both a theme and a project to the Student Union,” Luukkanen says.

” Through the theme of the Year of Arts, AYY wants to show the artistic side of the community and the different ways members have in expressing their creativity. The project itself is seen through AYY organizing various kinds of Year of Arts events throughout the year.”

The choice of theme comes from the move of the ARTS School of Art and Design to Otaniemi.

” We wish to give the ARTS students a warm welcome to Otaniemi and organize hopefully enjoyable activities with the entire community. We wish to make it seen that ARTS students are a strong part of the Aalto community,” Luukkanen said.

During the year there are a lot of events. The Year of Arts comes to a finale during the fall semester.

” The spearhead of the events coordinated by AYY will be the Otaniemen yö (Otaniemi Night) event upcoming in the fall. The event will be a cross-artistic city event, consisting of small events throughout the campus area. The main spotlight will be on the content created by our students,” Tero Uuttana says.

” Everyone is welcome. Students, staff, alumni; every resident of Espoo.”

The Year of Art events are already taking place. AYY is collaborating with the Ateneum art museum, so all AYY members can go and see the Ateneum exhibits for free on the 28th of March at the Taidetta meille (Art for us) event.

AYY also organizes the Wall Art for VĂ€re contest in cooperation with the University, which searches for a piece of wall art for the 70-meter supporting wall rising next to the VĂ€re building. Also, the design calendar by AYY and TOKYO for the year 2018-19 will be created based on the design that won the calendar contest at the start of the year.

There are also plans to continue building the AYY art collection, started up in 2017. The collection’s first pieces are up for viewing at the hallway leading to the U-wing of the Bachelor center building.

” The word of the year is cross-artistic,” Julius Luukkanen sums up.” The aim is to bring art to suit various tastes into the spotlight in numerous ways. Every one of us is creative.”

” Art advances well-being,” Tero Uuttana adds.” It can help students to enjoy themselves and to cope with stress.”
