1. COURSES STARTING IN JANUARY AT UNISPORT

2. CHANGES TO UNISPORT TERMS OF SERVICES FROM JANUARY 1ST, 2013

UniSport has made some changes to their terms of services from January 1st, 2013. New additions concern validity of a term sticker and interference of misuse and inappropriate behavior. Read more here.

3. SKI RENTAL SERVICES AT VIIKKI’S UNISPORT

UniSport offers cross-country skiing equipment at the Viikki Sports Center. A rental package includes skies, poles and boots for traditional style skiing. The package is rented in exchange for an identity certificate. No reservations in advance. Read more here.

4. CITIZENS’ OWN SNOWBOARDING PLACE OPENED IN KIVIKKO

The city of Helsinki has opened citizens’ own snowboarding place in Kivikko. The snowboarding place offers challenges for more advanced snowboarders and easier rails for new comers. Admission fee is 13€. Read more here.

5. GET ACQUINTED WITH ADULT’S SPORTS SERVICES IN ESPOO

The city of Espoo provides plenty of sports opportunities for adults. Demonstration of the services available will be organized this Saturday 12th of January in LeppÀvaara at Sello library at 12-16 and next Saturday 19th of January in Espoon keskus at Entresse library at 12-16. 6. LET’S MOVE TOGETHER- APPLY FOR INSTRUCTOR

AYY is organizing a course in collaboration with UniSport and FSHS for students who are currently inactive or find it difficult to be physically active alone. Now we are looking for 4 to 6 instructors for the course. The instructors are working with peer support principle, so they do not need to be educated sports instructor. All you need is right attitude and willingness to commit to the course for 3 months. AYY will train chosen instructors. Instructors will not get monetary reward, but will be rewarded with free UniSport training cards. 1. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A PARTNER FOR BADMINTON OR SQUASH?

UniSport is gathering a list of players who are looking for a partner for badminton and squash. If you wish to have your name on the list, please send your contact information and a short description of your level to Erkki Somervuo (erkki.somervuo@helsinki.fi).

2. SPORTS AND SAUNA IN OTANIEMI

Did you know that there is a bookable sauna in Otahalli accommodating up to 20 persons? Otahalli can host extended evening events starting, for instance, with conference meetings, followed by a ball game and topped off with a sauna. Read more about the sports and sauna combination and prices here.

3. SKATING SEASON IS STARTING IN THE OUTDOOR ICE RINKS IN HELSINKI

Rainy and mild weather has postponed the openings of outdoor ice rinks this year. However, OulunkylĂ€ outdoor ice rink will probably be opened on week 47 and Kallio outdoor ice rink on week 48. 1. RENOVATION AND EXTENTION AT UNISPORT TÖÖLÖ FACILITIES HAS BEGUN

The renovations at UniSport Töölö have begun from the gym extension.

The renovation will affect the services in following manner:
‱ The gym will be open until November 18th 2012.
‱ Group training, courses and regular practice times for the group training room will continue until December 2nd 2012.
‱ UniSport Töölö will be closed between December 3rd 2012 – January 6th 2013.

The City Centre and Meilahti campuses will try to take into consideration customers from Töölö in their Christmas timetables for group training. Further information(in Finnish).

2. NEW SQUASH LEAGUE WILL BEGIN IN DECEMBER

UniSport is starting a new squash league in December. The league will be played in the divisions each composed of 3-4 players. Each player will play against other players only once. The players will agree on the date and time by themselves and are also responsible for booking the place and the expenses. The registration for the league should be done prior to 22nd Nov. 3. EXCEPTIONS IN THE UNISPORT’S SPORT CENTERS OPENING HOURS IN TURN OF THE YEAR

Friday 30th Nov: All sport centers are closed at 17.00
Thursday 6th Dec: All sports centers are closed
24.-25th Dec: All sports centers are closed
Wednesday 26th Dec: All sports centers are open between 12.00-18.00
Monday 31st Dec: All sports centers are closed at 18.00
Tuesday 1st Jan 2013: All sports centers are closed

4. CITY OF ESPOO OFFERS SUPERVISED FITNESS ACTIVITIES ALSO WITHOUT ADVANCE REGISTRATION

City of Espoo is organizing supervised fitness activities also without advance registration. Activities available include instructions for gym equipment, aquatics with a single payment and different physical activity try-outs. See the locations, prices and times here. (in Finnish only)

5. AALTO PREDATORS WILL BEGIN OPERATION

Aalto University’s own American football team has been established and will begin the operation on Wednesday 14th of Nov by holding a first practice session. The aim is to participate to higher education’s American football league played in late winter 2013. The team is looking players studying in the Aalto University. Everyone is welcomed regardless to gender, age and fitness.

The practice will be held at UniSport City Center Campus (address Fabianinkatu 33) at 17.30-18.30. You should take with you indoor shoes, a training outfit and a drinking bottle. First, the basics of the game will be introduced without helmets or other gears. You can just come and watch. American football won’t leave anyone cold! Further information here.

2. HOCKEY NIGHT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ON 13TH OF NOVEMBER

UniSport and Espoo Blues proudly present:

Hockey Night for International Students on Tuesday, 13th of November

We invite you to experience the Finnish hockey culture in Espoo. The Hockey Night includes
‱ a bus transportation to Barona Arena in Espoo. The bus leaves at 16:00 from the front of Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3, Helsinki) and at 16:30 from Otahalli (Otaranta 6, Espoo)
‱ approx. at 17:00 an introduction tour at Barona Arena
‱ a short introduction to ice hockey (rules and game-play)
‱ at 18:30 evening’s match: Blues vs. Saipa
‱ after the game (approx. at 21:00) a bus transportation to Helsinki via Otaniemi

The event is free of charge. The bus schedule and the stops will be
announced to the participants also by email.

Prices of the supervised courses offered by the city of Helsinki will be cut in half starting from 22nd of October. There are still free places within following groups:

1. SAUNAS TO BE BUILT IN THE LOCKER ROOMS AT UNISPORT MEILAHTI

Two new saunas will be built on UniSport Meilahti. Construction begins 15th of October and it has been evaluated to last approximately four weeks. During this time, one of two locker rooms for women and seven showers from men’s locker room are unavailable. Read entire news here.

2. PERSONAL TRAINING SERVICE AVAILABLE IN UNISPORT

UniSport is offering Personal Training services. The service is sold either in 6, 10 or 20 times packages and it can be paid in two installments (20 times package even in three installments). Read more about Personal Training in UniSport here.

3. FREE TICKETS TO A BASKETBALL GAME

Tapiolan Honka, a local basketball team, is playing in the 1st division. Honka opens their season this Sunday 14th of October at Tapiolan Urheiluhalli by having a game against Ura Basket, Kaarina. Honka has offered free tickets to the game for Aalto University students. There are 40 free tickets available in AYY’s Otaniemi service point (address: Otakaari 11). Go and get one for yourself and for your friend.

Late Night with UniSport , the event for all late night owls, takes place on 5th of October from 7pm at Kumpula sports center. There are plenty of different sportive activities until the midnight. 2. SPORTS INFO TO THE CITIZENS OF HELSINKI

City of Helsinki is organizing free of charge sports info to the citizens of Helsinki. The info is intended for people who are willing to start exercising but do not know where to start. People taking part the info has an opportunity to discuss with the specialist about recommendations for physical activity and ask for some tips for how to begin. Registration for the info is not required. Find out more (in Finnish)

3. NOTE THE CHANGE IN DATE OF THE MEETING FOR AALTO UNIVERSITY’S TOP-ATHLETES OR ATHLETES STRIVING TO THE TOP

Are you a top-athlete or an athlete striving to the top and studying at the Aalto University? Come and meet other top-athletes or future top-athletes who are studying at Aalto and exchange the ideas and experiences of what it is to combine student life and top-level sports. There you also have an opportunity to learn more about Metropolitan Sports Academy URHEA. The program of the evening is very informal and relaxed. The evening is held on Thursday 4th of October at 2-4pm at JĂ€merĂ€ntaival 3 A. The exact location is “takkakabinetti”. The little snacks will be served during the event. Registration latest on 2nd of October to liikunta@ayy.fi.

4. AALTO-KYMPPI ON 22ND OF SEPTEMBER

Aalto-kymppi, the kick-off event of the Aalto University academic year in terms of sports, will be organized on 22 September 2012. The event will start at the Otahalli sports hall. The event, starting at 3.00 p.m, is intended for anyone who wishes to take part in the 10-kilometre event in any way they seem fit: walking, jogging, running, forwards, backwards, or any other way. If you wish, you may also stop to admire the incredibly beautiful scenery along the route.

The course runs along the Espoo Waterfront Walkway from Keilaniemi to Otsolahti, and under KehÀ I back to the Walkway in Otaniemi. The race finishes in the Otaniemi sports field. Before the race, there will be a joint warm up session for all participants, and a prize will be awarded to the Aalto Athlete of the Year.

All participants from Aalto are granted a free technical sports shirt with Aalto and Rantamaraton logos. Aalto University will pay the Aalto-kymppi participation fee for all its students, staff and alumni.

Last day for registration is 14th of September with timekeeping. If you wish to participate without timekeeping, you can register even in the morning of the event. When you register, please indicate the name of your school/department or team. Remember also to fill in your student number. Link to the registration form.

5. BATTLE FOR THE MASTERY OF OTANIEMI ON 4TH OF OCTOBER

Aalto-Liike will organise a battle for the mastery of Otaniemi on 4 Oct 2012. At the forefront of Otaniemi, you will fight in a laser battle, the concept familiar from Megazone. The tournament consists of 16 teams with ten players per team. The game mode is open for now, but most likely we will play Capture the Flag game with some modifications.

The weapons use infrared laser in order to function, so you do not have to worry about protection. We have 40 weapons of which 20 are constantly in use. The event lasts for about 8 hours, and a single fight lasts about half an hour. Each fight is a qualification game. The participation fee is €100/team or €10 per participant. Payment instructions will follow later with the game programme and other useful stuff. Registrations will be accepted in the order of registration. Registration is binding and you can sign up your team with an e-mail with your contact information to oliver.heinonen@ayy.fi.
