Trial in the property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation to begin on 10 Feb

The judicial process of the property dispute between Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and KY Foundation will begin at Helsinki District Court on Monday, 10 Feb 2014.

The property dispute began in 2010 when the Student Unions of the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki merged into Aalto University Student Union. In connection with the merger, it became clear that the Student Union of the Helsinki School of Economics had transferred over 42 million euro of its property out of reach of the new student union to KY Foundation, which had been established through an intermediary.

AYY’s evidence shows that the property transfer had been planned secretly from the members of the Student Union of the Helsinki School of Economics already for years before the merger of the student unions.

”It is unfortunate that the issue will have to be resolved in the courtroom. However, there is too much confusion on the property transfer for us to leave it unresolved, says President of AYY Board Lauri Lehtoruusu.

AYY hopes that the property dispute could finally be clarified in the district court and the donated funds would be returned to the use of the present and future members of the Student Union.

Aalto University Student Union has awarded its first acknowledgments at its fourth anniversary at the Event Centre Telakka on Saturday.

The badges of merit and honour are awarded for active operations in favour of AYY and its objectives. There are three different badges of merit and honour; the community badge, the badge of merit and the badge of honour. In addition, AYY has a special acknowledgment, the hero badge.

Community badge is awarded to a person who has actively operated in the student union and has promoted the objectives of the student union through one’s actions.

Badge of merit is awarded to a person who has acted in the student union extensively for a long period of time.

Badge of honour is awarded to a person who has acted in favour of the student union and promoted the objectives of the student union very actively and extensively for a long period of time.

Hero badge is awarded to an individual act or project, or a series of acts or projects, which have influenced the student union and the lives of its members.

The badges of merit and honour are designed by Harry Tensing and manufactured by Roman Tavast Ltd. The badges are silver and incorporated with gold and enamel. AYY’s insignia is the key element on the badges. The badges are worn on AYY’s ribbon.

The hero badge includes AYY’s insignia with inscriptions attached to a silver background. Over time, the hero badges will form a work of art on the wall of AYY’s Central Office. The hero badge is designed by Noora Laak.

For this first time, eleven community badges, fourteen badges of merit, one badge of honour and two hero badges were awarded. Proposals for the awarded badges were made in the years of 2012 and 2013. The hero badges were granted to Otaniemi Recycling Centre and Ossi Miikkulainen. AYY’s first badge of honour was granted to Tuula Ilmes.

AYY awarded the International Deed and Learning Promotion Deed of the year 2013

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) has awarded the International Deed and Learning Promotion Deed of the year 2013 at its fourth anniversary on 1 Feb 2014. The Physicist Spex was awarded as the International Deed 2013. In addition, the honorable mentions of the international deed were awarded to Sergei Chekurov and Gaurav Das. Uudet koekäytännöt (”new examination practices”) project was awarded as the Learning Promotion Deed of the year 2013.

The Physicist Spex performed its spex Limbo – No loitering in English in December 2013. This gave the opportunity for over hundred international students to experience the performance, which is an integral part of the student culture, in the language that they understand. The deed of the Physicist Spex is an excellent example of how the integration of international students to Aalto community can be promoted.

Sergei Chekurov received an honorable mention for his activities to improve the position of international students in the Guild of Mechanical Engineering (KIK) and Students of Engineering (ITY). Thanks to Chekurov, many international students feel that they are part of the Aalto community. With this recognition, AYY wishes to encourage the student associations to include international students in their activities.

Gaurav Das was awarded an honorable mention for his participation in various activities (such as BEST and Student Family Friend). Das is an excellent example of an international student who is open-minded and interested in exploring the local culture. With this recognition, AYY wishes to encourage international students to take part in the Aalto community.

With the International Deed award, AYY wishes to draw attention to the importance of high-quality internationalisation for Aalto students. International students must have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the academic community at all levels. Uudet koekäytännöt project was awarded as the Learning Promotion Deed 2013. The project does concrete work to transform study performance in a more flexible direction. The effective accumulation of credits is becoming increasingly important both for universities and the students themselves and this project effectively removes practical obstacles to gain credits. In addition, the participants in the project have been very active and devoted in the piloting of the project and have persistently continued to develop the concept even after achieving the end point of the initial project.

The purpose of the Learning Promotion Deed is to support and make visible the actions and projects, which have promoted learning at Aalto University.

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) has gained a new partner, the consulting company Capgemini. In 2014, Capgemini’s Young Professionals Academy programme will be widely visible in AYY’s electronic media. Capgemini is also the main partner in Teekkari Tradition Party 2014.

AYY appointed the Board for the year of 2014 – Lauri Lehtoruusu appointed as the chairperson

The Representative Council of Aalto University Student Union (AYY) appointed the Student Union Board for the year of 2014 at its meeting on Wednesday, 4 Dec 2013. Student of Architecture Lauri Lehtoruusu (25) was appointed as the chairperson of the Board. Previously, Lehtoruusu has acted as the chairperson and vice chairperson of the Guild of Architecture. In addition, he has acted as a member of AYY’s Representative Council and the chief editor of May Day magazine Äpy.

AYY’s Piia Kuosmanen appointed as SYL’s President for the year of 2014

Bachelor of Science Piia Kuosmanen has been appointed as the President of the National Union of University Students in Finland for the year of 2014.

Piia is a 29-year-old student of information networks from Aalto University. This year, she has acted as the Chair of AYY Board. Previously, she has acted as the Vice Chair of AYY’s Representative Council, the chair of her guild and as a student representative in administration in Aalto University’s organs. As a leader, Piia is a determined and inspiring visionary, who makes people stand behind common goals and achieve them.

”Next year, it is time to discuss how to make Finland’s higher education system the best in the world. High quality education is the cornerstone of our country’s future! SYL will speak on behalf of education and work towards the construction of common solutions, so that students, and society as a whole, would have a better tomorrow” says Kuosmanen right after her appointment.

The following persons will operate in Kuosmanen’s SYL Board in the year of 2014: Jari Järvenpää (TAMY), Hilkka Kemppi (LYY), Mari Kröger (JYY), Petra Peltonen (TYY), Marko Rosenholm (HYY) and Pirre Seppänen (HYY).

The two-day general assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland will be held in Korpilampi, Espoo, on Fri–Sat, 29–30 November.
