AYY is looking into forged tickets for the Aalto Afterparty 2017 event

AYY has been informed of cases where forged tickets or wristbands had been sold to the Aalto Afterparty 2017 event, held on the 8th of September 2017. The people at the door noticed the forgery when inspecting tickets. Due to security regulations, we unfortunately could not let the holders of these tickets inside.

AYY regrets the inconvenience caused by the situation. We also hope that the party or parties who sold the tickets will understand that their activity was reprehensible both legally and morally.

As a result, AYY has changed the practices related to selling and distributing tickets and wristbands. We also hope that people who buy tickets from others would be alert in the situation and buy their tickets directly from ticket sales or from a person they know and can identify if needed.

We are looking into the matter together with the Aalto University Security Services and the Western Uusimaa Police Department. If you know something about the issue or have purchased a forged ticket or one you suspect to be forged, please contact Producer Niina Palm (niina.palm@ayy.fi).

Design contest: Aalto University Provost’s Chain of Office

Organizer:

Aalto University Student Union (further AYY)

AYY invites all students to an open design contest: To design and create academic honors (a chain of office) for the provost of Aalto University (further Aalto). The contest is open to every student of Aalto; you can participate alone or in teams of two.

What is the provost’s chain of office?

The chain is an academic honor worn in academic and state affairs by the provost, such as the opening ceremony of the Aalto University, in the Conferment Ceremony and in parades.

Definition of the contest design

The aim of the contest is to design and create a modern chain of office for the provost of the Aalto University, that clearly depicts the values of Aalto: Passion, courage, freedom, responsibility, ethics, and student spirit. The idea is that the chain of office represents the Aalto spirit. The organizers hope that the contestants grasp the task in an open-minded and unprejudiced manner. Design choices that are interdisciplinary are considered a plus. The chain does not need to be traditional, but it needs to meet standards of dignity and elegance to be used in academic and state affairs, and can it be worn by male and female provosts alike. The design needs to be financially feasible. The design schematic must state an estimate of the costs of producing the design. AYY withholds the right to not implement any design submitted if it so chooses.

Participants

The contest is open to all students of Aalto University, including postgraduate students.

Judges

The panel of judges consists of six members; three students and three members of academic staff. The judges will be unveiled later. The Secretary General of AYY will act as the secretary for the panel.

Submitting contest designs

The designs are submitted electronically to the Secretary General of AYY, niko.ferm(at)ayy.fi by Monday 16th of October 2017 by 16:00. The design should remain secret, and it cannot be one that has been unveiled prior to the contest. The sent material must contain a visual design of the chain of office, a description of the concept, and a list of materials. The material sent must be provided in a manner which allows the panel of judges can evaluate the design in all matters that are essential to the contest.

Reward

The winner of the design contest will be paid a monetary reward of 1500 EUR. The panel of judges will also award acknowledgement awards. The costs of crafting the winning chain of office will be decided separately with the winning designer. Reclaiming the crafted chain, intellectual property rights and possible further designs are separately decided between the winning designer and AYY.

Judgment criterion for contest designs

The panel of judges will take special note on the artistic quality of the design, along with how well the values of Aalto, student spirit, Aalto spirit and interdisciplinary themes are visible in the design.

The designs are evaluated namelessly, which is why the description or the design schematic should not contain any names of the designers.

Contest timetable and proceedings

The contest is announced on the 19th of September 2017.

The design phase closes on the 16th of October 2017 at 16:00, by which the designs must be electronically submitted to niko.ferm(at)ayy.fi

The panel of judges will make its decision shortly after the submission deadline.

The chain of office must be ready by the 4th of December 2017.

Accomplished members of the Aalto community were awarded at the AYY Annual Ball

The Aalto University Student Union AYY hosted its Annual Ball on Saturday, the 20th of May 2017. The boisterous celebrations were held at the Linnanmäki amusement park. The weather was sunny, and the partygoers had a chance to ride the rollercoasters and other amusement rides during breaks.

At the Ball, AYY rewarded commendable members and associations of the Aalto community. AYY handed out the 2016 Learning Contribution Achievement Award, 2016 International Achievement Award, the LuovutusAalto blood donation challenge award and gave out the Student Union’s official acknowledgments.

The 2016 Learning Contribution Achievement Award was given to Tomi Kauppinen and Lauri Malmi, who had headed the Aalto Online Learning digitalization project in an exemplary manner. The contributions of Kauppinen and Malmi created operations models used to develop teaching in Aalto. Also, thanks to their work, the digitalization of Aalto’s teaching advanced leaps and bounds in a very pedagogically sound manner.

The 2016 International Achievement Award 2016 was given to Codebus Africa. As a part of the Finland 100 anniversary year, the project took Aalto students on a 100-day trip to ten countries in Africa. During the trip, the students taught the local youth, especially girls, technical know-how and programming, with the aim of empowering them and creating change towards a better world. In addition, honorary mentions for the 2016 International Achievement were awarded to Reeta, who has been a part of the internationalization of the Aalto community for years, and Arthouse Family, whose international team organizes free dinners from recycled and leftover food.

In the spring of 2017, AYY organized the LuovutusAalto blood donation campaign with the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, the aim of which was to get AYY’s organizations and associations to donate blood. The campaign competition was won by the group that donated the most blood in relation to their size. The winner after two months of campaigning, with a clear margin, was the Bioinformation Technology guild Inkubio.

In addition, AYY awarded its highest honour, the Badge of Honour, to long time AYY active Lauri Lehtoruusu, who has been involved especially in the improvement of student housing, and whose work has been vital to the Student Union.

AYY also awarded Hero Badges to the Aalto Predators sports association, Tempaus 2016 and WiikonWappuSauna. AYY also awarded 6 Badges of Merit and 13 Community Badges, listed below.

Announcement
AYY
19th of May 2017
For immediate release

The Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and Avain Yhtiöt will start their cooperation in June 2017. ”The aim of the cooperation is to improve the information level of AYY’s members about the activities of Avain Yhtiöt and to increase the significant visibility of Avain Yhtiöt in the Aalto Community,” says Corporate Relations Coordinator Otto Bergius.

One of the most prominent themes of Avain Yhtiöt is social responsibility. “We want our work to be transparent and in genuine interaction with our stakeholders, and we take the social, economic and environmental impact of our operations into account,” says CEO Perttu Liukku and continues: “Cooperation with AYY will support our goals and will give us an opportunity to support students in their studies and preparation for the worklife.”

The cooperation between AYY and Avain Yhtiöt will be visible in AYY’s media, such as in the blog and in printed materials. Conversely, AYY will produce content on the website of Avain Yhtiöt.

However, the largest and most visible form of cooperation will be the social premises in AYY’s Otaranta property, called Avain Sauna. You can enjoy the heat in the Avain Sauna as before, but events will also be housed at the premises in cooperation with Avain Yhtiöt. The space will also be re-decorated to reflect the visual design of Avain Yhtiöt.

The Aalto University Student Union (AYY) is a service and advocate association for about 15 000 students of the Aalto University. AYY works as an advocate for its members, especially in matters of educational politics and social issues relating to studies. AYY also offers a wide range of services, such as apartments and premises, that both members and external parties can rent.

The Avain Yhtiöt Group consists of six reliable and responsible companies. The aim of these companies is to build a functional and safe living environment and to comprehensively develop the quality of housing and construction, both for the residents and for the environment.
