2. Excess student financial aid must be returned by the end of March
If a student’s income exceeded the annual income limit in 2010, one may voluntarily return excess student grants and housing supplements by 31 March. When the excess aid is returned by the deadline, you can avoid the recovery of the aid increased by a 15 %. Another advantage is that the student can choose the months which are returned. Higher education students can reuse the returned months.
The annual income limit is defined by the months when the student receives the aid. If the student has received student financial aid for 9 months, the annual income limit is 11,850 euro. You can check your own income limit at Kela’s electronic services (available in Finnish and Swedish).
More specific information on the topic is available on KELA’s website. You can also call students’ service number 020 692 209, Mon–Fri, 8am–6pm.
3. AYY’s operational grant application and the association notice are open
AYY will allocate operational grants to the associations in the first register of the association list. You may apply for the operational grant by 31 March and the grants will be allocated at the beginning of April. Late applications will not be processed. The registration form is available at www.yhdistykset.ayy.fi/ (in finnish). If your association does not apply for the operational grant (associations in the second register, for example), the association notice must still be filled out. The allocation grounds of the operational grant and further information is available at AYY.fi’s page Grants for Associations.
4. OUBS needs your help
On Thursday, 24 March, we will publish the document ”Ilman bensaa” made by AYY’s own tv channel OUBS where we follow the journey of Teekkari Car Club from Levi to Otaniemi.
The publication party takes place from 8pm onwards at OUBS at the address Jämeräntaival 1 A 50. We provide you with the document itself, live music and (most likely) drinkable punch.
We need help with the event arrangements! Do you want to be a cameraman, roadie, soundman or something else? Please let us know if you want to participate at oubs@oubs.fi. We need you!
5. Finland Post Welfare panel at Finlandia Hall on Monday, 21 March
AYY and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society convene the Finnish opinion leaders at Finlandia Hall on 21 March to create policies for securing the well-being in the 21st century. The panel will include Jorma Ollila, Björn Wahlroos, Risto Siilasmaa, Petteri Koponen and Ville Miettinen. Topics include the prerequisites for future Finnish economic competitiveness and the kinds of decisions and actions that will create them.
The event is open to everyone and free of charge but you have to sign up in advance. Further information and the registration instructions www.hyvinvoinninjalkeen.fi (in finnish).
6. Aalto’s website significantly renewed during the spring
The public websites of all six universities will be renewed in March-June. In addition, Into website for students will be published. The school-specific websites are in accordance with the visual image of Aalto University and will be produced with the same publishing platform as aalto.fi service. For this reason, news can be easily moved around from one site to another. We can also present the contents of social media on the websites.
Into website for students will be opened on 28 March 2011. Into website (working title is student channel) includes information concerning studies and university services for Aalto students and current news concerning studies and Aalto University.
Further information on this topic is available in Aalto Inside (in finnish).
7. Ongoing application for a student representative in TEK Board
The new board of TEK (Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland) will begin its operations next September and the board is looking for new student representatives. The term of the board is three years but the position of a student representative is evaluated each calendar year by the Teekkari Committee.
Applications must be submitted either electronically or as a paper version by 1 April 2011 to TEK’s teekkari representative. The applications are handled by the Teekkari Committee and the council will cover the issue at its meeting based on the presentation of the committee. Further information on the board and the application process is available on TEK website (in finnish).
8. Sign up for the international Youth Assembly conference
Youth Assembly conference was organised at the U.N. Headquarters, New York City in August 2011. The conference is organised for the ninth time and themes are social entrepreneurship and social leadership. The conference is intended for future leaders who are 18-26 -years old. The organiser, Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, is a remarkable cooperation organisation of the U.N.
The application process for the conference is ongoing. Further information and the registration is available at Youth Assembly website.
9. Volunteer for the Development Education Summer School
The European Development Education Summer School will be organised in Finland on 12–18 June. Approximately 80 participants from around the world will arrive in Petäys, near Hämeenlinna. Kehys (the Finnish NGDO Platform to the EU) is looking for volunteers interested in development education or development cooperation to join the summer school.
Volunteers have the opportunity to learn more about development education, meet NGO practitioners from different EU countries, Asia, Africa and Latin America and to gain valuable work experience from this field.
We need volunteers for reporting in the working groups of the summer school, communication work, logistical and office tasks and organising the international conference in Helsinki on 16 June. Further information on Kehys website (in finnish).
