The opening ceremony

The students and staff of Aalto University are all invited to celebrate the opening of the academic year on Tuesday 4 September 2012, at 1 pm. The festivities will take place on the Otaniemi Campus this year. The opening ceremony will start with the traditional procession of professors and will continue until approximately 2:30 pm.

Due to the limited number of seats in the opening ceremony, the ceremony can be followed as a webcast at Design Factory.

The blooming campus

After the official opening ceremony the festivities will move on to Ainon Aukio (”Aino’s Square”) to plant hundreds of flower bulbs to decorate the campus for the joy of the Aalto people. Concurrently with the planting ritual the Aalto Garden Otaniemi agricultural society will be established. The planting layout is organised by the Landscape Architecture Student Club Vista.

Aalto Party

Aalto Party is the official but more relaxed continuation of the opening festivities. This party will bring together students and staff to enjoy various activities.

Aalto Party will kick off with the traditional challenge in which the board of AYY (the Student Union of Aalto University) and the management of the university will wrestle. During the afternoon you can participate in human bingo game, watch movies, have a sauna bath, meet and make acquaintances with people, build your dream sandcastle campus and much, much more.

Additional information concerning the Aalto Party programme is on Facebook and at http://avajaiset.ayy.fi/english/

The party will take place on the lawn and parking area between Otaniementie 11 and Konemiehentie 2.

There will be free bus transportation from the Töölö and Arabia campuses to the official Aalto Party.

3. Update the student status to your travel card by the end of August

The student status updated to HSL travel card in the academic year 2011-2012 is valid until the end of August.

If your studies continue and you wish to receive the discount in September, please update your student status at HSL service points or at temporary campus offices.

4. Cleaning service discontinued in shared apartments from 1 Oct onwards

The rent in shared apartments in Teekkari Village and Leppävaara has included regular cleaning service of common facilities in shared apartments by the maintenance company. As of 1 Oct, a new property maintenance agreement will come into force, which no longer includes the cleaning of common facilities in shared apartments. After this, residents must ensure the cleanliness of their apartment by themselves. Stairways and common premises in the building will be cleaned as usual.

Cleaning of common premises in shared apartments is discontinued due to high costs and equal treatment of AYY’s tenants. In the properties in Helsinki, the cleaning of common facilities in shared apartments has never been included in the rent.

After 1 Oct, the residents must ensure the cleanliness of common facilities and keep their apartment in a generally acceptable condition. The storing of waste in common facilities or balconies, for example, is strictly prohibited and may result in warnings and even the termination of a rental agreement. If a shared apartment is found to be in an unsuitable condition, a cleaning request is submitted. After the request, the apartment can be cleaned by AYY and cleaning costs will be charged from all residents of the shared apartment. If problems arise, residents may contact the castle warden in their building or AYY’s housing office.

Housing Specialist Jaakko Koivula (050 520 9444, firstname.lastname@ayy.fi) answers any questions and provides additional information.

5. FSHS introduces a national service number for hearing-impaired customers

From the beginning of September the FSHS will operate a national service number intended for hearing-impaired customers: 046 8769 155.

How to use the service:

  • Contact your text relay service provider and request a call to the FSHS appointment reservations / treatment need assessment number for hearing-impaired customers.
  • The text relay service will read out your message or request for information to the FSHS to the FSHS appointment reservations / treatment need assessment staff.
  • The text relay service will tell the answers given by the FSHS appointment reservations / treatment need assessment staff to you in writing.

For more information contact Hanna Kari, Health care service Manager, phone 046 710 1303

6. The FSHS launches a new laboratory appointment reservations system

From 1 September 2012 a new laboratory appointment reservations system will be in use at FSHS Helsinki and Turku, allowing students to book appointments for laboratory tests online at yths.fi/laboratory.

The new self-service system will make lab reservations easier. More information will be provided during the appointment with the referring nurse or doctor. For more information about the appointment reservations system and its launch contact Laboratory Coordinator Hannele Salminen, Hannele.salminen(at)yths.fi

7. Registration for examinations obligatory at all Aalto schools

Registration for examinations (examinations, interim examinations and interim tests) announced in WebOodi will become obligatory at all Aalto University schools. Registration shall be done no later than one week before the examination via WebOodi.

Students who wish to have their examination questions in another language than the language of instruction of the course shall request them from the teacher-in-charge of the course two weeks before the examination. Please note! At Aalto ECON, the examination questions are available only in the language of instruction of the course.

The list of students registered for the examination is checked before the start of the examination, and only the registered students are let in the examination hall. In large examinations, everyone may be let in the examination hall and the registration checked after the examination; in such cases the examination papers of those not registered for the examination will not be corrected. Students cannot negotiate other examination practices with teachers.

This practice will enter into force at the start of the first evaluation period of the academic year 2012–2013 (from 27 August 2012 to 8 September 2012).

8. Find a flat, Mate!

Find a flat, Mate!™ is an event for international students looking for an apartment and for landlords looking for a reliable tenant for a longer or shorter period of time. This event is targeted to the international students who have faced difficulties in finding a place to stay in Finland and also for people who are looking for a new tenant, subtenant, flat mate or simply want to offer a place to stay overnight.

The goal is to share information about how to find a flat in Finland and to find solutions for acute housing problems. Lyyra, HOAS, Forenom, and Ne-Rå Councelling centre, are also present to share first hand tips about housing in Finland.

9. Celebrating the 140-year journey of engineering students in the autumn!

This year, 140 years have passed since the establishment of Teknologföreningen. That is also the year from which the Student Union of the School of Technology, which preceded AYY, counted its age.

To mark the occasion, we will celebrate the 140-year journey of engineering students in an appropriate magnitude.

The anniversary will culminate in the 140-year celebration of engineering students organised on 10 Nov 2012. The party is celebrated in the anniversary week starting on 3 Nov, and there are plenty of activities ranging from ballroom dancing to a singing sauna and herring breakfast.

More information on the celebrations and engineering student events can be found on www.teekkarius140.fi website or on Facebook.

10. Work for the engineering students’ 140th anniversary week!

The 140th anniversary week of engineering students will be celebrated between 3-11 Nov 2012 and arrangements are already well under way. Teekkari Section is now looking for an enthusiastic team to assist the section in order to make the party even more amazing. As a team member, you get to see the creation of one of the largest anniversaries of the year and leave your mark on a final result. We hope that team members have time from September until the end of the year.

In addition to the team members, we will elect a huge number of helping hands, and we will inform you about these duties later in the autumn.

Whether you are an experienced tech guru or a visionary ready to work on major decorations, please sign up at teekkarius140@list.ayy.fi.

For further information, please contact the chair of Teekkari Section Anu Juvonen, anu.juvonen@ayy.fi.
