2. AYY is looking for students who deserve recognition!

A conscientious team player or a diligent workhorse. A relentless creator of Aalto spirit or whoever.

AYY is looking for individuals from among its members who deserve recognition. The recipient does not have to be an active organisation member in ivory towers or an eternal student who has worn out the couches at AYY’s office. On the other hand, these features do not preclude anyone from receiving acknowledgement. Acknowledgements, which are granted for the first time, will be awarded in a festive event in 2013. Proposals are received by the acknowledgement working group.

The suggestion form is available at bling.ayy.fi

Who gets and who is given? You decide! The deadline for applications is 12noon on 31 Dec 2012.

3. Polytech Choir Fund grants allocated for the choir period 2012-2013

The purpose of Polytech Choir Fund is to support and promote the singing hobby of AYY and its association members through scholarships and grants. Polytech Choir Fund invites applications for scholarships for the choir period 2012-2013.

Applicants are asked to clarify their singing hobby and to justify the need for a grant. The application should include the applicant’s social security number, taxation municipality, contact details and account number, copy of AYY’s membership fee receipt or the student card, as well as the clarification of the costs of the singing hobby during the period September 2012-August 2013 with supporting documents.

Applications must be submitted by Friday, 14 Dec 2012 to the address Polytech Choir Fund, Antti Ilmavirta, PL 69, 02151 Espoo. You can also submit your application in an envelope with the same contact details to AYY’s Otaniemi Service Point. The applications can also be submitted by e-mail to antti.ilmavirta@polyteknikkojenkuoro.fi.

Late applications will not be processed.

4. AFYE lecture: Jazz and leadership

Aalto First Year Experience lecture: Improvising organisation – leadership lessons from jazz

Saxophonist and Vice Rector of Sibelius Academy Jari Perkiömäki tells about and demonstrates with musical examples together with bass player Jori Huhtala how to take advantage of the jazz metaphor as the tool for leadership and organisation. The lecture will be held in Finnish.

  • Time: 13 Dec, 4pm-6pm
  • Location: Library of Materials Science and Engineering, Learning Hub Livingroom, Vuorimiehentie 2, Espoo

Welcome!

5. Practices of the weekly newsletter to change in terms of event information

From the beginning of the next year, individual events will be advertised primarily in ”this and next week’s events” section of the weekly newsletter. Information about the event is automatically transferred to the weekly newsletter from the event calendar of AYY.fi, for which all associations and organisation should have usernames. Therefore, individual events will no longer be published as their own weekly newsletter section other than in exceptional cases. So please check that your association/organisation/guild/subject organisation has the username which you can use to add an event to the event calendar on AYY.fi, and add your event to your calendar in time. If, for some reason, you do not have the username or you have lost it, you can request it from the Communications Specialist Joonas Jylhä (joonas.jylha@ayy.fi).

6. Apply for the Housing Committee!

Application for the next year’s housing committee is open! The meeting of the housing cooperative (ASY) will decide on the housing committee members in January and you can register through this form.

The housing committee is responsible for preparing amendments to the housing regulation for the Representative Council, supervising the resident selection and the implementation of the review of the right to housing, as well as processing housing-related complaints, applications and presentations within its decision-making power. The housing committee meets and makes decisions approximately ten times a year.

Deadline for applications is 4pm on 19 Dec.

For further information, please contact AYY’s housing sector: asuminen@ayy.fi

7. AATE & Entropy workshop: lighting design at 6pm on 19 Dec

Do you have an upcoming party? A DJ is booked and guests invited, but the venue is dreary and boring? Disco balls and coloured lights are too much from the 90s? Do not worry, Aate and Entropy will help you!

AYY’s cultural arena Aate and the association of electronic music Entropy will organise a party lighting training on Wednesday, 19 Dec 2012. In the workshop, you will learn how to design and implement stylish lighting for various purposes. Scanners, strobes, spots and light controllers will become familiar.

The workshop will be held in Finnish. Previous knowledge is not required.

  • Location: Cultural Arena Aate, Jämeräntaival 1 A basement, Otaniemi

8. MoA’13 wants your thesis

Is your thesis / diploma work larger than life? Is the topic and content of your thesis interesting but dull when in a file? How could you be able to make everyone believe that you’ve done a scientific finding that will change the world? How could you be able to show it to mankind?

Masters of Aalto – MoA among friends – will consist of an exhibition and a stage where thesis and diploma works from all the fields of Aalto University will be displayed and shown. Aalto Uni’s year show presents studies and research during May 8-26th 2013 in downtown Helsinki.

By taking part in MoA you will have the opportunity to expand your network, you will get help to display and visualise your work, get the attention of a wide audience for your work, get an opportunity to show society what you have become and have a chance of a lifetime to have an exhibition participation on your CV.

If you have graduated or will graduate between May 2012-May 2013, please sign up or reveal a thesis / diploma work.

Extended application time for BIZ, CHEM, ENG, ELEC and SCI until 13 January 2013!

For more information and more detailed schedule see moa.aalto.fi, or contact producer katri.winqvist@aalto.fi

More information here.

10. Basic car maintenance course at 6pm on 12 Dec

On Wednesday 12 Dec 2012 in the Car Club at Jämeräntaival 1 at 6pm, I will arrange a course about some basic car maintenance as if: what´s important to know about when owning a car. Course contents:

  • changing a burned out light bulb; how hard can it be?
  • changing a window wiper; what? You can do that by yourself?
  • tire pressure; why should you care?
  • checking the fluids; yes, you have a lot of different fluids in your car.
  • other questions that you will come up with

Come by yourself or bring a friend/girlfriend/mother/other and get answers to these questions. If you or your significant other has a car with a burned light bulb or broken wipers, answer to me and I will buy the supplies required for a decent price, you will get your car fixed and everybody will learn something new. I need your car registration (Finnish) or make/model/year. This is a pilot course to assess the need for such a course. Welcome! Best wishes, Chair of TAK Henrik Hieta, henrik.hieta@aalto.fi
