AYY has the honour to crown Havis Amanda, or more familiarly, the Manta statue, at the Helsinki Market Square on May Day Eve. Students gather to Hietalahti Square at 3.30pm and continue to the Market Square in the May Day parade (https://www.facebook.com/events/1583123418600907/). Festivities start with the washing of the statue at 5pm and Manta is crowned at 6pm. You do not want to miss this show!
Would you like to see Manta’s crowning from the air? Spot Manta’s student cap and share your picture on twitter and/or instagram with the hashtag #MatkallaMantalle and participate in the contest where the winner gets to watch Manta’s crowning from the crane (https://www.facebook.com/events/892362350823100/). The winner must be a member of AYY.
After the crowning, the party continues at Dipoli May Day (https://www.facebook.com/events/1583123418600907/) or at KY’s May Day party at Kaivohuone (https://www.facebook.com/events/1469973306625991/).
3. #Aaltowappu is here – check out the events at wappu.fi site
A huge number of events are organised in Aalto community during the weeks before May Day. By following the site wappu.fi you know what is happening! This year’s main event takes place at Kauppatori Square on May Day Eve when it is AYY’s turn to press the student cap on Havis Amanda statue.
AYY declares open the traditional #AaltoWappu contest, the purpose of which is to share positive May Day photos and updates on social media. So publish your photo or update with the hashtag #AaltoWappu on instagram and/or twitter and participate in the contest. The contest is open between 00:01am, Mon, 13 Apr 2015 – 11.59pm on 1 May 2015. The best May Day photos and updates are rewarded with AYY’s hoodies and t-shirts. You can also participate in the contest by sending your photo by email to tiedottaja@ayy.fi.
4. Mosaic’s MP3 Experience TODAY!
Once more it is time to confuse pedestrians of Helsinki with the 7th MP3 Experience organized by Mosaic! The idea is to download a music file (approx. 45 min) to your phone or music device, push PLAY simultaneously with the crowd and follow the instructions you hear. Previously we have done Harlem Shake on the Senate Square, invaded the Main Post building and done all the cliches of tourism in Esplanadi park.
What is going to happen this year? 200 people having a group hug on the Market Square? Blocking the escalators of Forum shopping centre? Hitch-hiking on Mannerheimintie? There’s only one way to find out!
1. Go to https://www.facebook.com/events/800875606666943/
2. Download the file when it’s available. DON’T LISTEN TO IT YET.
3. Show up in Ruttopuisto on Mon 27 Apr by 5pm latest. We’ll start approximately at 5.10pm.
4. Follow the instructions, get crazy and enjoy!
Dresscode: Overalls or anything else and a spoon
5. PELMU’s May Day festival at Smökki
What happens, when bands that have been training the whole winter in a windowless basement are unleashed on the number one stage in Otaniemi, in the sparkling crossfire of Teekkarispeksi’s stage lighting? A breathtakingly stunning show that you don’t want to miss! So gather your friends and come to PELMU’s Wappufestival in Smökki and let the badass bands of this village amaze you! The event also acts as the official after party for Teekkarijaosto’s Crazy John.

8. On The Couch & Pekka Haavisto
Acute crises, war, peace & business – the role of future change makers
What is a crisis? How does the situation for example in Ukraine, Syria or Yemen affect the local and global scene? This time in On The Couch, a discussion event organized by the Sustainable Business Club, we will discuss the hot topic of man-made crisis, and what the role of us – future change makers – could be in those. Could business help to build peace?
On The Couch is an event where opinion leaders and students get together to discuss and debate about critically acclaimed issues. To dicuss conflicts and crises, SBC has invited Pekka Haavisto to dicuss, learn and share thoughts with us students.
The event takes place on Thursday 7 May at 5:30pm in Think Helsinki in the city center of Helsinki. Sign up by sending an email to aaltosbc@gmail.com before 29 Apr with the headline “On the couch”. Tell us who you are, what you study and why you want to join. Some pre-material about the topic and more information will be shared in the beginning of May with the 20 participants joining the event.
