Interested in development cooperation? Application open for SYL’s Advisory Board for Development Cooperation

Are you inspired by global development and promoting education internationally? Are you a persistent communicator, good at forming networks, or know a lot about funding? Do you want to put some of your knowledge to the use of the rest of the world?

We are looking for people with lots of ideas who are committed and motivated to join the Advisory Board for Development Cooperation (KENKKU) of SYL. SYL is Finland’s largest lobby and service organisation for university students. SYL represents 15 member organizations and 135,000 university students. The development cooperation advisory board advises SYL’s executive board on development cooperation, and administers SYL’s development cooperation projects together with the Coordinator for Development Cooperation.

We expect KENKKU members to commit to their tasks and be motivated but KENKKU is also meant for developing your personal expertise. KENKKU members are expected to attend most meetings during their term.

In 2016-2017 in addition to managing the project in Guatemala, we will take our development cooperation work to a new direction planning, for instance, joint projects and working with businesses. The term of office is from August 2017 to August 2018. We will elect 15 members, some of whom will be continuing from the previous term. The board meets about once a month in Helsinki and teleworks in various degrees between meetings. We serve lunch at the meetings, and also cover the travel expenses for the member of the board to participate in the meetings.

KENKKU members are divided into smaller groups each of which will appoint their Chair and member responsible for communication. We are looking for people with different skills for the advisory board:

  1. Team members of the communications team for the Advisory Board for Development Cooperation. The communications team will ensure that our development cooperation work is visible on social media, create content and come up with ideas for developing our communication. This time the communications team also gets to design and implement a crow-funding campaign.

  1. Members of the project administration group for Guatemala

This duty includes work on administering the development cooperation project in Guatemala. Members will also focus on annual reports and plans as well as keep in touch with our local partners. For this position, you will need motivation, interest in and knowledge of project administration, ability to work independently, as well as knowledge of Spanish. The Guatemala project continues until the end of year 2017 and we will make final report of the project in the spring of 2018.

  1. Members for the funding team

The funding team will ponder SYL’s option for a new direction for our development cooperation work, especially with a view to fundraising. How can we continue our development cooperation work of high quality when circumstances change and the sources of funding from e.g. the Ministry for Foreign Affairs narrow. Members of this team are expected to be inventive and be able to provide points of view on marketing and project funding.

  1. Members of team(s) planning new projects

Those who participate in the planning of new projects are expected to take the greatest responsibility over building new partnerships and working on project plans under SYL’s guidance.

SYL ask the student unions to submit proposals for 2–3 members for the Advisory Board for Development Cooperation. We do not require student unions to have local development cooperation activities and welcome applicants from various background. Applications should include a résumé and a cover letter. In the letter, the applicant can present their views on and experience in the field. Applicants are also asked to include ideas for how they would improve the level of awareness and knowledge of SYL’s development cooperation work at their student union and among students. Applicants should express their interest in positions based on the position profiles outlined above and to describe their language skills. Similarly, we ask applicants to mention plans that could prevent them from attending several meetings (e.g. studying abroad).

If you’re interested in applying to KENKKU as a representative of AYY, send your application to international@ayy.fi at the latest 11.5.2017 by 4pm. More information: Specialist in International Affairs Milla Ovaska (@ayy.fi). tel. 050-5209446

In our operations, we emphasize diversity and equal opportunities. We hope to receive applications from persons from diverse backgrounds and genders.

The results of Mountain Man architectural competition revealed

The results of the Mountain Man architectural competition were published today, on April 25th. The Mountain Man competition was organized during the year 2016 and focused on the urban landscape of the competition area. The competition was organized by Aalto University Campus & Real Estate (ACRE) in co-operation with Senate Properties. The main goal was to achieve supportive material for the new urban approach of the city planning of Kemisti’s block. KY, TF and AYY are not financially involved, and were not involved in organizing the competition, but the competition’s jury had one student representative.

The student organizations are thankful that the competition programme included student housing projects and the new possible Student Centre planned by TF, AYY and KY. The entries were really interesting and we will have a further look into them as the results are now public. However, we do not want to speak out yet, as we haven’t had enough time to familiarize ourselves with the results yet.

Regardless of the result, KY, TF and AYY will continue working in close cooperation with the city of Espoo and the land owners of Kemisti’s block to ensure the best possible conditions for a Student Centre that matches our goals. The Student Centre is envisioned to facilitate a “Meeting point Aalto 24/7” in Otaniemi, something that even the city planning committee of Espoo has mentioned in their theses for the development of Otaniemi.

The competition contributions can be viewed at http://aaltocre.fi/mountain-man-entries/ and the announcement about the competition result can be seen at http://aaltocre.fi/en/nexus-selected-winner-chemists-block-architectural-design-competition/.

New AYY student housing tenement in Jätkäsaari completed in September

Aalto-yliopisto Student Union
Press release 28.03.2017
For immediate release

AYY board members visiting Jätkäsaari tenement in March 2017.

The new student housing tenement of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) in Jätkäsaari by the seaside will be completed in September. The Atlantinkatu 7 building will have 122 apartments, most of which are one-room apartments. The building also has a communal sauna and some commercial spaces, to which suitable tenant businesses are still being sought.

”The Atlantinkatu building is the first building project to be fully complete from start to finish during AYY’s existence.  This is only the beginning, however, since the aim is to build over a thousand new apartments in the following ten years”, says housing and real-estate correspondent Board member Onni Lampi of AYY.

The building project started in the spring of 2016 and has progressed according to the set timetable, says AYY construction foreman Hannes Helminen. The building is designed by Sweco Architects Oy and the main contractor at the site is NCC Suomi.

”The importance of student living in the capital region is growing constantly. The apartments are a very concrete and important service to the members of the Student Union. As the Länsimetro completes, the Jätkäsaari building will be only 15 minutes away from the Otaniemi campus”, Lampi concludes.

The application process for the Atlantinkatu apartments opens to AYY members in April 2017. More info on the building and applications will be published at the start of April at www.ayy.fi

Publishable immediately

AYY’s information coordination has had a tumultuous start for the year. We now have a new coordinator to renew our brand, and a new deputy in charge of information coordination.

Starting from the end of February, information coordination is done by Katarina Vesikko. Vesikko has graduated from Helsinki University as a master of social sciences, and has held positions in public administration as communications officer. In addition, she has studied media education, film and television studies, gender studies, Russian translation and in Aalto’s Magazine Design master’s degree program.

”I believe the purpose of communication is to serve people, in this instance meaning the students. That’s why I’ll do my very best to ensure that the Student Union’s communication will be open, effortless and inclusive. In my opinion, this is best done with reciprocal dialogue – in other words, call me, tweet me, come visit me: let’s work together for a better result!”

Henrik Lähdesniemi will also be working as a Branding Coordinator at AYY for the duration of the spring. Previously, he has worked in re-branding projects for KY and the student organization Aalto Marketing Society.

”I’ve done a lot of work in community branding. Renewal of the AYY brand is an excellent continuation of this work, and I have great enthusiasm and the needed serious attitude for the project!”

Students are building a better Espoo of the future – AYY’s municipal election campaign

Students are building a better Espoo of the future – The AYY municipal election campaign reminds, among other points, about the importance of student living

The municipal elections take place next month. The student union of the Aalto University, AYY, is taking part in building a better Espoo of the future. The student union has defined goals for the next term that will help build a better Espoo when fulfilled.

  • Espoo must create a plan regarding the building of student housing, one that clearly states the goals regarding the production of student accommodation. The leniency clause concerning the smaller required amount of parking spots in the Otaniemi area should also be ensured to stay in effect in the future. AYY is ready to build new homes as soon as the planning is complete.
  • All Espoo residents below the age of 25 must be offered free contraception.
  • The city bike trial must be extended to include Espoo and especially Otaniemi, so that it will be available for use together with the Helsinki city bikes. Cycling needs to be supported and developed to ensure efficient and easy transportation.
  • AYY supports the completion of the Tiederatikka (Science Tram) project, which helps to unify the metropolitan area university campuses.
  • Espoo needs to focus on developing the T3 area, meaning Otaniemi-Keilaniemi-Tapiola. The city needs to support startup companies and other businesses, so that as many as possible will continue to operate in Espoo.

The AYY municipal election campaign is visible at campus during March, and one of its central aims is to encourage Aalto students to vote and affect the future of their home municipality.
