The flats of Ida Aalbergintie will be transferred to SATO from 1.7.

The Student Union of Aalto University, AYY, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, HYY and the Häme Student Foundation have sold the Property Company Ida Aalbergintie 1 in Pohjois-Haaga, Helsinki, to SATOkoti Ltd. Management of the property and 164 rental flats with their residents will be transferred to SATO from 1.7.2016. As a result of the transferral, flats at Ida Aalbergintie 1 can no longer be applied for through the Domo system.

The rents for July will be paid on the basis of previous payment information and SATO will send tenants new rent bills during July. From 1.8.2016, the rent will be paid into the account of SATOkoti Ltd with a personal reference number. If residents have any questions about the transferral of the rental contract or other practical issues, they can contact the customer service of SATO directly.

Provision of reasonably-priced student accommodation near the place of study is a core member service of AYY. The campus of Aalto University is concentrated in Otaniemi and AYY is developing its property stock to meet the needs by constructing new student flats on the campus or within good transport connections to it. At the moment, AYY is constructing a new student hall in Jätkäsaari in Helsinki and preparing a new project in Otaniemi. In addition, many of the older accommodation sites have come up to the time for a complete renovation. The next ones to be renovated are Jämeräntaival 7, 5 and 3 in Otaniemi. The work is beginning with Jämeräntaival 7 C in January 2017.

Tempaus events are a way for students to influence current affairs using people power with a twinkle in their eye, yet with serious intent. The purpose of Tempaus2016 is to draw attention to the state of basic education in Finland. The intent is to stimulate public discussion about it and ensure that the level of basic education in Finland shall be maintained also in the future.

Tempaus will be organized at the turn of October-November 2016. The aim is to have student participants visit all 2,400 comprehensive schools over two days to implement a pre-planned program together with the pupils. Tempaus will climax in a big Tempaus Party in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The party will bring together proponents of education and others interested in the topic.

AYY: Aalto University endangers its internationalizing development by setting high tuition fees for students from outside the EU/EEA area

Aalto University Student Union
2.6.2016
For immediate release

Aalto University has announced its plan to charge a tuition fee of 12 000 – 15 000 Euros from students from outside the EU-EEA area who are admitted in 2017. The sum is much higher than the minimum fee of 1,500 Euros established in the new University Act that was enacted at the beginning of this year.

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) supports free education for everyone. AYY fears that the university’s decision will cause the number of international students to fall sharply and gradually destroy the university’s international degree programmes.

AYY is concerned about the fact that the university’s internationalization goals did not sufficiently influence the size of the tuition fee. The tuition fees for students from outside the EU-EEA area adopted in Sweden in 2011 and in Denmark in 2006 have led to a lack of international students from outside the EU-EEA, reduction in the number of international degree students and a reduction of international programmes. Studies show that students choose their schools based on the university’s ranking, how well known the country is, costs and employment expectations. The 15 000 Euro fee for master programmes becomes questionable in a European context, as many top European universities allow tuition for free or at a minimal fee. The argument that quality correlates with price is not a valid reason for a high tuition fee.

According to its new strategy, the Aalto University seeks to offer international-quality education in multicultural and diverse groups. AYY shares this goal and thinks it is important that every Aalto student learns the intercultural communication skills required in the global job market as part of their studies. International students create networks for both the university and the students, form a significant part of the university’s future doctoral students and make studying a genuinely international experience that broadens horizons. AYY demands that the Aalto University critically evaluate the effects of the fees on the number of applicants and its internationalizing development and do everything it can to preserve its multidisciplinary and diverse internationalism.
